What is Lasik Eye Surgery?
Many people wear corrective lenses to give them clear vision. Refractive error, where the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing properly, causes blurred vision and difficulty seeing at certain distances. Lasik eye surgery can correct refractive errors and give you clear vision with little or no need for your glasses or contact lenses.
What is Lasik Eye Surgery?
Lasik stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses. Lasik eye surgery is a popular procedure performed on an outpatient basis. Patients only need anesthetic eye drops for comfort, and the entire process takes less than half an hour. The quick treatment and fast recovery time make Lasik a popular option for people tired of corrective lenses.
Lasik with Dr. Alabata can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and even astigmatism by changing the shape of the cornea. This clear, dome-shaped structure at the front of the eye can adjust the angle of incoming light. Reshaping the cornea allows light to focus correctly, providing you with clearer vision. The laser reshapes your cornea in microscopic layers for precise vision correction.

How is Lasik Eye Surgery Performed?
Dr. Alabata uses a femtosecond medical laser to create a small flap in the cornea’s outer layers. Lifting this flap gives the surgeon access to lower levels of the cornea. An excimer laser removes microscopic layers of the cornea without affecting the surrounding tissue. This laser can reshape the cornea with such accuracy that you can see clearly with little or no need for corrective lenses, often for the first time in years. Treatment takes 20 to 30 minutes, although the actual laser reshaping of the cornea takes only seconds.
What is Recovery Like From Lasik Eye Surgery?
Many people can see better after just one day, often well enough to drive and return to work. You should make sure you protect your eyes from dust and other irritants for two weeks while the flap continues to heal. Your vision will continue to improve over the following months as your cornea heals entirely and the eyes adjust.

What Results Will I See With Lasik Eye Surgery?
Lasik eye surgery is effective for over 90% of patients, giving them 20/20 vision or even better. You may not need corrective lenses at all anymore. Some people may still need them for activities such as reading or glare reduction while driving at night. Dr. Alabata will prescribe eye drops for your surgery and give you detailed aftercare instructions.
Am I a Good Candidate for Lasik?
Most people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or have astigmatism make good candidates for Lasik. If you have a very significant refractive error or a thin cornea, you might not make a good candidate, but other procedures can still provide results.
